Happy New Year Everyone

Well done to all the girls who managed to get down to Plymstock on Sunday for the South West South regional trials.

To our knowledge six of the eight girls at U18 level who did trial are definitely through with another girl scheduled to trial at the first training session on 25th January again at Plymstock.  In addition to this, one of the three younger girls that trialled has also made the U15s squad.  For those other girls who were not successful in the first selection hope is not all lost as they are in reserve in case of injuries so may be called up at a later date, the fact that they did not make the first selection is no reflection on their abilities - the standard was exceptional this year.

This is a wonderful result for Taunton Fillies - the best ever - and as parents, managers, coaches and players we should be thoroughly proud of all our girls.

This Sunday we are due to travel to an away triangular at Barnstaple along with Tavistock.  We are awaiting final confirmation of this but anticipate that we will have a 2pm kick off.  With this in mind could everyone be at the club and ready to leave at 11.15 am.  Please ring Nigel if you are able to help with transport as one or two of the regulars will be unable to drive this weekend.  Minehead RFC has a newly formed Girls section and their girls will also be joining us for this fixture.  They have about 6 or 7 U15s who are very new to the game and they have been invited to come along to give them some valuable game time with a view to cultivating future opposition.  Should there be any change to these arrangements we will email you to let you know so keep an eye on your inbox.

To cast your mind back to before Christmas the bag packing at Morrisons on Saturday 20th December earned us the tremendous sum of over £760 - well done to all who put the effort in.  There were some noticeable gaps in the ranks however but these people will have other opportunities to help with fundraising.

We have a Race Night scheduled for Saturday 7th February.  Initially this was to have taken place at St Andrews Mens’ Club but due to unforeseen circumstances they have reluctantly had to cancel our booking.  However North Petherton Rugby Club has been able to step into the breach and the Race Night will still go ahead albeit at a new venue.

There are still a small number of tables seating eight people available at a cost of £40 per table (or £25 without the race sponsorship).  Please give Nicky or Brenda a ring on 07861 639 386 or 07515 826 337 if you wish to book a table.  Included in this price is your entry fee plus a Hot Pork and Stuffing Roll supper.  If you are unable to raise a full table but still wish to participate there will be a few mixed tables which still have room for individuals at £5 per head.

It would be helpful if everyone who has already booked would now please pass the payment for their table/individual place to Brenda or Nicky - any cheques should be made payable to Taunton Fillies please.

The function will be adults only and this will give those parents who are unable to help with transport or bag-packing the opportunity to support their girls and raise much needed funds for Tour.   There will also be a raffle during the evening and even if you’re unable to make the Race Night you could always donate a raffle prize to add your support that way.  Please pass any raffle prizes - alcohol would be particularly welcome - to Brenda or Nicky.  Your generosity will help us to raise much needed funds and the more we make the less the girls will have to pay for Tour.

For their own fundraising effort the girls have a ‘Sing-Star’ karaoke evening planned for them and their friends to enjoy and raise money.  This will take place in the Solts Bar at the club on Friday 27th March from 7pm to 10.30pm and tickets are £5 each.  Cat and Jen Taylor will be selling the tickets nearer the time.

Girls, please invite all your friends to join in the fun.  This is your opportunity to help to raise funds for your Tour.

Finally with all the Regional developments we felt you might appreciate an updated fixture list for the rest of the season.

Well done to all those of you who travelled to represent your County last weekend - two trips to deepest Cornwall in two weekends is as much as any club can ask of its players.

In addition to this congratulations to those of you who have been put forward for Regional trials on January 11th 2009 - this is the highest number of girls put forward from the Fillies at either age group since their inauguration and is a telling reflection on just how far the standard of girls’ rugby in Taunton has travelled.  To those not nominated, better luck next year.  We’re very proud of all of you.

Bag packing on Saturday 20th will run from 10am to 4pm working in shifts - we still need to hear back from a few of the U18s and one or two U15s.  Please endeavour to give as much of your Saturday as you can - the funds are for YOUR Tour.  If you can’t make it for work reasons con Mum or Dad into coming along in your place please - the more the merrier!

Tonight is the last training before Christmas and until the home match against Sarries and Liskeard on Sunday 4th January 2009.  Any change to the normal kick off time and we will email you.  Training will resume again on Wednesday 7th January, normal time, normal place.

Finally we’d like to wish all the girls and their families a very happy Christmas and a successful New Year and leave you with something a little more light hearted!

A team of mammals is playing rugby against a team of bugs.

The Mammals are leading 10 - Nil at half time.

The Bugs bring on a centipede as a half time replacement.

Immediately a lion runs up the middle and is stopped dead by a crunching tackle from the centipede.

Minutes later a greyhound is hurtling for the try line when the centipede pole-axes him with a spectacular cover tackle.

A hat-trick of tries follows from the centipede and the Bugs are victorious.

"Flippin' heck" says the lion says after the final whistle, "why weren't you playing in the first half ?"

"I was getting my boots on," replies the centipede.

Kevin Moggeridge’s first training date is next Wednesday and this is our last training date before Christmas so please make every effort to attend training that night.

Training will restart on Wednesday 7th January 2009, usual time, usual place but we do have a home fixture the weekend before that on Sunday 4th January along with Exeter Saracens and Liskeard.  If you are able to play please be down at the club by 1.00pm latest for a 2.00pm kick off.  Unless you hear differently this will be the timings for that fixture.

Please speak to Nigel about the bag packing at Morrisons on Saturday 20th December so we can work out how long a time we can cover in the store.  The U16 boys side have been packing recently to raise funds for their tour and they were told anyone who was unable to do the bag pack would not be allowed to go on Tour.  We are not quite as draconian as that but would stress that if important work commitments stop you from being able to help then it would be nice if you could ask a parent or someone to come and help in your place.  Please don’t leave it to just a few.

Well done to those of you who travelled to Newquay on Sunday and a special thanks to Mark and Nigel for taking on the driving responsibility.

This Sunday sees the County girls heading back down to Cornwall to play Gloucestershire and Cornwall again in Newquay.  At time of going to press we are unable to ascertain full arrangements for both the County training session on Friday night and for the coach pick-up on Sunday.  As soon as we hear anything we’ll let you know so keep an eye on your email please.

Kevin Moggeridge’s first training date on December 17th is fast approaching please make every effort to attend training that night.  Bag packing at Morrisons on Saturday 20th December is coming along quickly behind it - please endeavour to turn up to help that day and if you have other work commitments then you should persuade someone to come and help in your place - all monies raised at the bag packing will help to subsidise Tour and it’s only fair on the girls turning up that if you can’t participate you ask someone else to stand in for you.

Last Sunday’s County games at Frome were played in pretty grotty weather conditions.  Those of you who came off frozen to the bone and who don’t possess ‘UnderArmour’ type lycra playing kit for wearing under your playing shirts might like to ask Santa nicely for some.  If Santa needs any guidance any of the coaches or managers will be happy to point him/her in the right direction.  Well done to all who turned up and played - numbers in Somerset are worryingly low and extra credit must go to the U18s who played the full match with no subs at all.

At the time of going to press we are again unable to ascertain exact details of the arrangements for County training this Friday night.  This is frustrating for all of us especially those with other commitments within their family.  All we can say is watch your email closely, keep checking the Somerset RFU website and hopefully someone will have the courtesy to inform us of arrangements sooner rather than later.  Nigel will not be going on Friday night so anyone hoping for a lift with him will have to make other arrangements please.

As for this Sunday we have an away fixture down in deepest Cornwall at Newquay along with Plymouth - we have arranged minibus transport for all players and coaching/managerial staff - there may well be a few spare seats for parents, some of whom have already requested seats.  Until Nigel gets final player numbers tonight we can’t finalise which parents can join their daughters that day but will do our best to accommodate those who wish to go.

You will need to be at the club for 10am to leave as soon as possible afterwards for a two and a half hour plus journey aiming to arrive at Newquay by 1pm for a 2pm kick off.  We probably won’t get back to Taunton until around 7 to 7.30 at the earliest.  It will be a long day and you will need to bring a packed lunch and ensure you have had a good breakfast.

Even if you have already told Nigel you are playing or not please confirm it to him again to clarify final numbers for transport.

We have been informed by the club that any players who have not paid their membership by 30th November 2008 will not be allowed to play - this directive has been applied across the board at all levels from the First Team down.  We have only a handful of girls still to pay, please make sure you pass your form and payment to Nigel at your earliest opportunity.

Emma Small has been working very hard lately updating the Fillies website on www.tauntonfillies.co.uk

There is a guest book where you can add your comments and lots of photos, match reports and newsletter copies.  Why not check it out - you might even find your own mugshot on there and it’s another way for parents to keep abreast of all that’s happening with the Fillies.  Emma is also working on our section of the club website but tells me this is a much slower process so doesn’t make as comprehensive reading as the Fillies site quite yet.  Watch this space!

Last Sunday’s fixture at Plymouth Albion was a great day.

The U18s teamed up with a handful of Cullompton players to beat Plymouth Albion (with some Cully help) on their own first pitch.  The final score was Nil - 26 to Taunton with Sophie Balcombe and Sarah Bebbington scoring a try each supplemented by two additional tries from Cullompton’s scrum half Kelly and three conversions from Emma Small.

Only a handful of U15s were available but they had a good session with Jen Taylor scoring her very first conversion in one of the games.

This Sunday we face up to Cullompton again but at home this time with a 2pm kick-off.  Please be down at the club and changed to warm up at 1.30pm

Don’t forget that Kevin Moggeridge, will be down at the club to do some specialist coaching for you all on these dates:

December 17th

January 7th
February 28th

Please make sure you keep these evenings free to attend training as we would like to give him the opportunity to work with a full strength squad at both age groups.

Regarding the date for bag packing Morrisons have told us we can cover whatever time we want on 20th December as they are open from 8am to 8pm.  We need to ensure we can cover the time we are there with plenty of bodies.  Please let us know how much of that day you can be available.  We are arranging this to raise funds for your Tour.  If any of you are not available on that date because of work commitments please find a replacement to cover you - talk nicely to mum or dad - we’ll happily welcome all hands to help.

Don’t forget we need numbers for the Newquay match on December 7th so we can book transport - STILL no-one has told us that they can play as yet - if we are to book a coach we need to know NOW!

No-one has responded to our suggested date for tour of the weekend of 18th / 19th April 2009.  Please check and advise us of any commitments you may have for that weekend - especially those of you with exams looming.

End of Season Presentation Evening - we need to book a date for this with the club - any suggestions?

We still have a few girls who haven’t paid their club membership for this season.  You are not covered by the RFUW Liability Insurance if you’re not a club member so really shouldn’t be playing.  Those of you who still have to pay know who you are.  Please see Nigel with your completed form, RFUW ID photo and payment urgently.  If you have lost your form he will always provide you with another one.  Please sort this out sooner rather than later - the season is already almost three months old.  Some of you who are already members still need to pass two passport sized photos onto Nigel for your RFUW ID - please get these done as soon as possible too.

Thanks to Brenda for organising the Candy Floss again at Bridgwater and North Petherton.  These two events didn’t prove as lucrative as Taunton and it was felt that this may well have been in part down to less girls being available to help although I’m sure the weather on the Saturday wasn’t much of an incentive to people to hang around eating candyfloss either.  Again these things are not organised for our benefit - the money will go to your Tour so input from yourselves helps.  We are also open to any other ideas for fundraising - get your thinking caps on and come up with some suggestions.

Well done to all those who turned up and played down at Exeter Saracens last Sunday with Liskeard.  Hope you all enjoyed your game.  We have a free Sunday this week due to the County match cancellation so you get a week off -

see you all at training next week.

Kevin Moggeridge, who is the RFUW Coaching Officer for South West South, has agreed to come down to the club to do some specialist coaching for you all.

He will be at the club on the following Wednesdays:

December 17th

January 7th
February 28th

Please make sure you keep these evenings free to attend training as we would like to give him the opportunity to work with a full strength squad at both age groups.

Christmas is coming ever closer - we have one definite date for bag packing - this will be Saturday 20th December and will probably be from 10am to 4pm subject to confirmation.  This is a long stint for anyone to undertake so we will hopefully have enough numbers to work out a rota.  We realise that some of you work Saturdays but please do your best to keep that date free - the more people we can take along to man the tills the more money we should collect to go towards Tour.  We’re quite happy for parents, grandparents and siblings to help too - the more the merrier and we’ll always lend you a Fillies top so you look the part.  There may possibly be other dates too - but we need to confirm this.  We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know anything further.

Speaking of Christmas - if any of you are drawing up your list for Santa, especially those of you who are new to the game this season, you might like to add rugby kit i.e. protective gear, under armour etc, to your list.  If you’re not sure what type of things to ask for then seek advice from Steve or Mark.

We have a return fixture on the 7th of December down in Newquay.  With the great distance in mind we have decided to organise coach/minibus transport for this fixture.  We need definite numbers for this match earlier than we would normally expect to enable us to book the correct sized transport.  Please let Nigel know if you can play that day and be aware that we will be leaving earlier than usual and thus returning later too.

Carnival time again.  Brenda is organising the Candy Floss again - this time at the Bridgwater and North Petherton events this weekend.  She needs some help with this.

For Bridgwater you will need to meet her on Friday evening near the Crossed Rifles pub at 5pm.

For North Petherton on Saturday she will be setting up stall outside  141 Taunton Road, North Petherton  (opposite the park on the main road) again at 5pm.

Could anyone who is available to help please phone her on 07515 826337 or 01823 334859 to finalise arrangements.  We raised over £120 at the Taunton Carnival - it would be great to try and beat that at these two events to add to the Tour fund.

Speaking of Tour - it is looking like the weekend of 18th / 19th April could be the most likely date.  To enable us to firm this up could anyone with any major aversion to this date please let us know asap.

Well done to all of you who turned out for last Sunday’s home fixtures against Newquay.

The U18s won a hard fought fight finishing a tight game with a 24 - 20 score to take the match from the visitors.  They played 7 a side with one rolling sub and showed some excellent spirited play especially in the second half.

The U15s had a tough game against a well drilled opposition.  The final score was 75 - 20 again on a half pitch playing 7s (much to Nigel’s relief as he ended up refereeing again) but there were some excellent flashes of play.

Both squads had good games and had obviously benefited from training on tactics noted needing attention from previous games.  Building on this, further training on rucking and ripping the ball in a maul will probably be coming up soon.

This Sunday we travel to Exeter Saracens along with Liskeard and Looe.  Please be at the club for 12.30 latest - we need to arrive at Sarries around 1.30 for a 2 to 2.15 kick off.  Changing facilities are limited at Exeter so please arrive changed and ready if you can and obviously don’t leave valuables in the changing rooms.

Offers of help with lifts would be appreciated - please let Nigel know if you can help.  Could those going direct to Exeter also let him know so we’re not waiting for you at the club.

Last week Mark Constable had to referee the U18s game and Nigel again did the U15s game.  We were only informed mid morning on Friday that the promised referees couldn’t show.  However it is less than ideal to have the coaches or managers doing the reffing as they can’t coach and support the team if they’re acting in an impartial ref’s role.  We find it incredibly difficult to get match referees - there just aren’t enough of them around, and as we play at the end of the weekend we often find that the other teams grab them first.  With this in mind we are asking for anyone who might like to train as a referee to come forward and have a chat about it with us.  It might be a parent, an older brother, aunty, uncle or family friend of one of the girls - it’s not an exclusively male domain.  If you’re at all interested please speak to Nigel or Mark.  If we were able to get a couple or more of our own in-house refs trained up this would make everyone’s life much easier as finding a referee for each of the two matches on a home Sunday is probably the most stressful part of managing the team.

As an aside to this we would also welcome anyone interested in coaching to come forward too.  At present as Steve has other family commitments it falls to Mark to cover the bigger part of training both squads which isn’t ideal - U18s shouldn’t practice contact aspects of the game with U15s for example.  Any additional help would be welcomed both on Wednesday nights and match days.  If you are even vaguely interested in finding out more about either role please talk to Mark, Steve or Nigel.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to help with the Taunton Carnival.  Because of your efforts we raised almost £130 from the sales of candyfloss and will also receive £100 for helping with the cash collection behind the money float - all that bending down was worth it!

We’re hoping to also repeat the candyfloss experience at both the Bridgwater and North Petherton carnivals - more news on that from Brenda soon especially if more help is needed.

Well done to all of you who attended the County Day at Taunton School.  Squads are still to be finalised but we think that all the U15s who attended will go forward to the squad.  We have yet to receive feedback on the U18s.  Please keep an eye on your email in-box as Jon Bendle should be emailing out to you with further information on this.

We understand that the training session on Friday 31st October which would have been at Yatton is now cancelled and there is also a possibility that the proposed match on 9th November may well not take place - again please keep an eye on your emails for clarification on this.

This Sunday we’re at home again, this time against Newquay.  There is a possibility we might be joined by another club too.  Newquay will travel a great distance for this fixture - lets get as many of our girls there as possible to make their journey worthwhile.

Please be at the club changed and ready by 1pm for a 2 o clock kick off.  Parents please feel free to come along and support your girls - I’m sure they appreciate it.

Training will be on as normal next Wednesday even though it is half term - please make the effort to come down if you’re not going away on holiday.

Sunday 2nd November sees us travelling away to Exeter Saracens to join them and Liskeard in another three way fixture.  Exeter have plenty of girls so we may well end up combining with Liskeard in a similar fashion to the recent Tavistock fixture.  We will definitely need help with transport so if you can lend a hand please let Nigel know.  Because this fixture falls at the end of half term and people may not be available for training on the previous Wednesday please could you let Nigel or Brenda know sooner rather than later of your availability to play that game.

I have put a latest fixture list overleaf as some of the newer girls won’t have received the one issued on Newsletter #3.

Well done to all the girls who played last Sunday - and it was lovely to see lots of supporters both new and old there on the sidelines.  It was also good to be back playing at Hyde Park - it feels like quite some time since we managed a home game there.

The U18s were well in the lead at half time with a score of 41 - 5 so decided to treat this as their full time score and play the second half on a half pitch with the two sides shuffled together to give the newer Kingsbridge squad and ourselves some development experience.  Our girls showed a great attitude to passing on the benefit of their experience to the visitors.  This can only help with the development and continuation of girls rugby in the South West.

Thanks to Rico from Queens College who refereed their game - considering he’d already refereed the boys U13s in the morning I think he earned his after match meal.   I understand the stand in ref for the U15s has finally regained his breath and is currently on the San Miguel in sunny Spain ostensibly for work - possibly as a means of recuperation.  Don’t think he’ll want to repeat that experience in a hurry!

As for the U15s game, well done to all the girls for teaming up with the majority of the Kingsbridge visitors.  Despite being well down at half time the girls fought back to a very respectable 27 - 33 full time score.

Thank you to everyone who is helping with the Carnival on Saturday.  All the girls and parents who are doing the carnival walk will need to be at the market car park for 6.15pm at the very latest.  We will be going out about 18th in the procession.  Brenda will be down there to meet you from about 6pm.  I understand the candyfloss gang have been given their instructions direct from Brenda

Dress code:  Could all the girls who have a pull on burgundy drill top from Tour the year before last please wear them as the sponsors will probably be about (The Old Market Centre)  Girls who have joined since then need to wear the burgundy Fillies fleece as this also has local sponsors on it.  The newest girls who don’t possess either will be lent something to wear over your clothes.  Don’t forget girls you are ambassadors for the Fillies so be on your best behaviour and encourage any interested girls to come down to training and have a go if you get the chance.  Any queries please contact Brenda on 01823 334859 or 07515 826337

One of the girls from Plymouth Albion is currently setting up a website for the South West South region of which we are a part.  If you wish to have a look this is the web address:  http://southwestgirlsrugby.everythingrugby.com/

We have been asked to supply squad photos and to this end it would be wonderful if we could have all Fillies at the next home match on 26th October even if they are not fit to play or can only call in at the beginning of the warm-up so we can get these pictures taken.  Unless we hear otherwise from parents we will take it that there are no objections to the girls being featured.

Next Sunday is the second County Development Day.  Some of you will already have been emailed by Jon Bendle about it.  All those wishing to attend need to be at Taunton School (near the minibuses to the right of the main building) for 10am.  The day is scheduled to finish at 4pm but depending on how things go it may wrap up a little earlier and with this in mind the girls will need to have some means of contacting their parents if they need collecting before 4pm.   Girls:  please bring a packed lunch and plenty of drinks along with the usual playing kit including boots and gumshields plus  waterproofs in case it rains.  If you were unable to attend the Saturday session at Burnham then it is even more important that you go along this Sunday especially if you have the desire to be selected to play for Somerset.

We are hoping to have some dates arranged before Christmas for bag packing at Morrisons.  One of the parents works there and has kindly offered to help arrange this.  Once we know the relevant dates we will inform you to add them to your calendars.  We would expect all the girls to try and attend as many of them as possible but again we are aware that some girls have work restrictions.  With this in mind we are aiming for Friday evenings as well as Saturday afternoons.  We would also welcome any help from parents and siblings - we can always lend you a fleece or hoodie to look the part.  Remember the more we raise from this type of thing the less we will all have to pay for tour next Spring.

Speaking of tour - now is the time to start thinking about what we would like to do and when.    Last year the girls enjoyed a PGL activity weekend in Dorset culminating in a match against Oakmeadians in Bournemouth on the Sunday afternoon.  The year before was an overnight visit to Newquay  with a match against Newquay on the Saturday and one against Tavistock on the way home on the Sunday.  As we now play these two teams in the league maybe a different destination might be in order.  If you have any suggestions please let Nigel, Brenda or Mark have them as we will be looking at this in closer detail very soon.

We hope you are finding this newsletter helpful and informative.  However we do realise that teenagers are notorious for losing pieces of paper between receipt and delivery so not every copy may find its way home to parents.  This is why we also send it out as a general email.  Our email list includes all the girls’ addresses along with as many of the parents as we’ve been advised.  If you have an email address you’d like to be added just email us on thebebbs@hotmail.com

TAUNTON FILLIES

Newsletter

Short and sweet this week……

I understand we have had a reasonable response to our request for help with the Carnival - but we do need more volunteers, both for the walking part and for the candyfloss stall.  Brenda will be co-ordinating this - so could both girls, and also parents willing to support your girls, please let her know if you can help out preferably by ringing her on 01823 334859 or 07515 826337.  You could also email her on brenda.handsford@fsmail.net     After all the more money we can raise from any fundraising event the less you will have to pay towards Tour next Spring.

In an improvement on last week, Nigel has now had one person’s shorts/shoe sizes for playing kit - come on the rest of you.

Last Sunday’s matches at Tavistock went well - the U18’s were very magnanimous and split their talents between the two other teams with every one of our girls giving their all in the spirit of true sportsmanship - the final score was Tavistock 10 - Liskeard 38.

The U 15s joined with Liskeard to play against Tavistock and the score ended up at Tavistock 10  - Liskeard/Fillies Combo Nil.  This score line doesn’t paint an altogether accurate picture of the game which was played for most of the time between the two 22 metre lines and the two sides were pretty evenly matched

We appreciate that it isn’t always ideal playing for another team but the remedy to this is actually in your own hands girls - get enough of your friends to join up to make a full squad and avoid a repeat.

However we do feel all the U18s benefitted from the opportunity to play in a full 15 a side squad - indeed one of our girls did comment she didn’t realise you could have so much fun playing flanker!

Membership applications are trickling in.  Anyone who has still to join up please pass your completed forms and payment to Nigel as soon as possible.  If you have lost your form he will be happy to issue a replacement.

This Sunday we have our first home fixture.  The U15’s will play Kingsbridge and Tavistock.  The U18s will play Kingsbridge.  Final timings are still to be confirmed but unless you hear differently by email from Nigel please be at the club and changed by 1pm for a 2pm kick-off.  Please keep checking your emails to ensure you are aware of any slight changes to that schedule

Newsletter

In an earlier newsletter we mentioned participating in the Taunton Carnival - we have also had a very generous offer from one of the U15 parents.  She would be happy to allow us to sell candyfloss at the carnival using her equipment with all proceeds going to Fillies funds.  We understand this would also be a possibility on the nights of the Bridgwater and North Petherton carnivals.  This could turn out to be a nice little contribution to Fillies funds to go towards Tour in the spring and so all offers of help would be terrific.  It may be the case that the candyfloss machine probably ought to have some adult presence on grounds of health and safety.  We are more than happy to accept offers of help from any parents as well as the girls.  Taunton Carnival is only just over two weeks away so please let Nigel or Brenda know if you can offer that help.  We will need at least 10 people - although the more the merrier - to walk in the procession collecting donations and probably another 4 or 5 including a couple of parents for the candyfloss stall.  Don’t let this money-making opportunity slip through our hands.

Nigel has had precisely no shorts or shoe sizes for playing kit - new girls, if we don’t know what size you are we can’t issue your playing kit once you’ve paid your membership.

Well done to everyone who was able to attend the County training event at Burnham last Saturday - we hope you all had an enjoyable and instructive session.  Don’t forget you are all welcome to the second session which we understand will be at Taunton School on Sunday 19th October from 10am to 4pm subject to confirmation.  This includes all those girls who were unable to make the Burnham date as well.

We are still waiting for quite a number of membership applications.  Please pass your completed forms and payment to Nigel as soon as possible.  If you have lost your form he will be happy to issue a replacement.

The bar in the clubhouse will be open on Wednesday evenings during training for a trial period up until Christmas.  Because some people might well have to drive they will have tea and coffee available as well as the usual alcoholic beverages.  This is only for a trial period as it was felt by club management that there would be insufficient trade to warrant opening.  The message then is obviously use it or lose it!

There is also a carvery at the club each Sunday - details are available on the following website www.hydeparktaunton.co.uk should you wish to partake of this particular facility if you are not travelling to an away fixture.

Details of all club social events will be put on the notice board in the bar entrance (Solts Bar) at the top of the stairs in the stand.  Patronage of these club functions helps to maintain the facilities we all enjoy to enable you all to play

Firstly could any new girls who have not been issued with playing shorts and socks please pass your shorts and shoe sizes to Nigel so we can arrange for this kit to be issued to you.  These items are only to be used for matches - they have been kindly donated as playing kit by our sponsors and should not be used for training, school/college rugby or any other purpose.  Should you lose them you will be asked to pay for their replacements as we do not have an unlimited supply.  Wear them with pride as a member of the Fillies squad.

This next weekend is scheduled for County trials right across the country.  However, in Somerset, things will be organised slightly differently this year.  The trials will take the form of two development days which are open to all girls who play rugby in Somerset regardless of ability.  The first of these days will be this Saturday 27th September at Burnham on Sea RFC from 10am to 1pm.  The second session will take place on Sunday 19th October at Taunton School from 10am to 4pm.  The idea is to give all girls playing across the county access to up to two days of good coaching.  Then the best girls will be selected to represent their county.  No matter how new and inexperienced you are, please take up the offer of two days coaching if you are free.  We realise that some of you may well be working on Saturdays in order to keep Sunday free for games.  If this is the case don’t worry just go along to the second session in October.  All participating girls need to arrive complete with boots, water bottles and gum shields.  Previously County have charged £5 entry to the trials.  We have not been advised that this is the case this year.  However it would probably be a good idea to take £5 with you just in case they have omitted to advise us of an entry fee.  For those of you who have not attended before don’t be daunted - enjoy the excellent coaching on offer and hopefully a good proportion of you will be selected to play for Somerset.  Please let Nigel know if you will be attending as he has to forward a list to Jon Bendle at County.

As we mentioned on the last newsletter annual memberships are now due.  Please pass your completed forms and payment to Nigel as soon as possible.  If you have lost your form he will be happy to issue a replacement.

On a different note we thought we were in a position to issue a full fixture list for this season - however we have just heard that Bideford girls team have sadly folded so the list overleaf could and probably will still be subject to slight changes.

Last season the RFUW decided to transfer Somerset from the old South West North region with Gloucestershire and Dorset/Wilts to the South West South region with Devon and Cornwall.

Partially as a result of this, and also because during this last year we have forged stronger links with the Devon and Cornwall clubs, in the main we will play within the South West South area this season.  We also hope that this might have the knock-on effect of our girls being more easily known and recognised around the region and thus hopefully more of them selected to play at regional level this year.

There are ten clubs, all with varying sized squads, and as you can imagine it has been a bit of a jigsaw puzzle designing a schedule to give all the girls as much game time as possible.  Our thanks must go to Denise at Cullompton for her hard work drawing this up - it’s obviously not been an easy task.

The proposed format for each match day is as follows.   They should all be triangular in format with the u15s playing 2 matches of 15mins each way giving them their 1hr playing time and the u18s playing at 20mins each way giving them their allotted 80 min playing time.

However all the clubs are in agreement that this will depend on how many girls are available from each side and have all agreed that sometimes it may be necessary to mix and match teams from the girls available on the day.

Some of the away fixtures are quite a distance from Taunton - one of the less desirable outcomes of not having many girls’ teams.  With this in mind we will look to provide a coach to travel to the furthest fixtures.  However we are not in the financial position to be able to do this for all matches so all offers of help with transport are appreciated and the more people offer the more it helps to spread the burden.

Newsletter

 Number 1                                            Wednesday 17th September 08

Welcome all girls and their parents to the first Fillies newsletter

Great work on the part of all the girls, new and old, at Cullompton on Sunday. The U18s ran a very close match being just beaten in the end with a score of 41-38. Had they had a little bit more grunt in the pack they would probably have beaten them. Roll on The return fixture! The U15s had a resounding victory with a score of 42-25 including some good speedy finishes from a couple of the new girls. Excellent effort by both Teams.

This weekend (21st) we will Travel To play North Dorset at Gillingham and hopefully meet up there with the girls from Yeovil's Ivel Barbarians. We need to meet up at the club at 11.30 to leave by 11.45 in order to arrive by 1.00 for a 2.00 kickoff. Could anyone who is available to help with Transport ring Nigel on 01823 332206 / 07947 648786 / 07932 852664

Travel became quite a problem last year with us even needing to cancel one match because of insufficient offers of help with Transport. More encouragingly already this year parents have been offering to help Transport the girls to away matches. Please keep these offers coming. It is not the responsibility of the coaches and managers to get your girls to away matches. Very occasionally we might be able to lay on coach Transport but sadly The funds don’t run To This being a regular occurrence so parental help is vital.

On The reverse of this sheet is a list of dates - at present the full .details of opponents are Being finalised and we will issue an updated list as soon as it’s available and subsequently update it when necessary on The back of each newsletter. Passing the current skeleton information to you all will at least give everyone the chance to calendar all the dates.

We have been given the chance to earn £100 by helping with The Taunton Carnival on October 18Th, walking in The procession near The collecting vans and picking up all The stray coins - This is relatively easy money for The girls but requires a commitment of at least 10 People. As many of you will be going to the carnival anyway I'm sure you could help with this and it would be good publicity for The Fillies and probably help to increase our numbers.

Membership Time again! Most of you will have received forms from Nigel, indeed one person has paid already. Please complete the forms and get the money to Nigel as soon as possible to ensure you are covered by RFU insurance. Any parents who wish to take out family membership with their girls will be eligible for discount at the club bar. Any cheques for membership need to be made payable To Taunton RFC please and NOT Taunton Fillies.
